India has released a Catholic bishop accused of raping a nun

The nun alleges she was raped by Franco Mulak in her rural convent between 2014 and 2016.

First Priest Convicted – Mulakkal was the first priest to be tried in India and was acquitted by a court in the southern state of Kerala in the case.

2018 Complaint – For her part, the nun said she had returned to church several times and eventually decided to return to the police because her complaints were always ignored. She filed the complaint in 2018, but police began an investigation a few months after five nuns organized almost daily protests outside the high court. At the time of his arrest, the Vatican suspended him at his request. The dean has always denied that he did anything wrong.

Protests and Divisions – The protest divided the Christian minority in India, with the Hindu majority representing 2.3% of the population, according to the census. Mulakkal was arrested in September 2018 and later released on bail.
