Tragedy at Tiny Toes: Nursery Worker Accused of Manslaughter

Manchester, England – A devastating case has unfolded at Manchester Crown Court, with Kate Roughley, a deputy manager at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, facing charges of manslaughter by ill-treatment. The tragic victim, a nine-month-old baby girl named Genevieve Meehan, affectionately known as Gigi by her family, reportedly lost her life due to Roughley’s actions.

Prosecutor Peter Wright KC painted a grim picture of the events leading to Gigi’s death on May 9th, 2022. He alleged that Roughley, responsible for overseeing sleeping arrangements that day, subjected Gigi to a series of dangerous practices.

Firstly, Mr. Wright claimed Gigi was swaddled “excessively tight,” essentially immobilizing her. Secondly, instead of placing her on her back for safe sleep, Roughley allegedly positioned her face down, a practice known to carry a high risk of suffocation. To exacerbate the situation, Mr. Wright alleged Gigi was then “strapped front down” onto a bean bag using a harness, further restricting her movement and breathing. Finally, a blanket was said to have been placed over her, further hindering observation of her condition and potentially causing overheating.

According to the prosecution, Gigi’s distress and cries were disregarded as she remained in this perilous position for a staggering hour and thirty-seven minutes. Mr. Wright emphasized the “serious and obvious” risk of asphyxiation and death associated with such treatment. He further alleged that Roughley displayed a concerning lack of care, neglecting to check on Gigi with any genuine concern until it was far too late.

Kate Roughley pleads not guilty to both manslaughter and an alternative charge of child cruelty. The trial continues at Manchester Crown Court.
